WORLD OF ROCK 2002

Soundcheck

We are EXTREMELY proud to introduce our latest addition to World of Rock where we take a few moments to "Soundcheck" some of our favourite artists. This is the place to read our exculsives so make yourself comfortable and read on to learn more...

We can't tell you how excited we are to be bringing you this Soundcheck! After initially winning us over back in March / April, this band reigned through the month of June as our Artist of the Month and with their new video now airing on various UK TV channels, we're absolutely thrilled to be bringing you the latest World of Rock exclusive interview with none other than Holland's best kept secret.... KANE!!!!! Things are hotting up for Kane in the UK. Their debut UK album "What If" has just been released and the band hit our shores this month with a headline gig at the Mean Fiddler on 7th July. This will be followed by their first UK single release "Rain Down On Me" on 26th July, the very track which is now airing on the big music channels. Guitarist Dennis van Leeuwen very kindly agreed to take a few moments out of the band's busy schedule to answer our questions...

For the Dutch Kane fans, we have given Astrid of www.kane-abroad.nl persmission to translate our interview into Dutch. Ga voor de Nederlandse versie naar www.kane-abroad.nl (to read the Dutch version go to www.kane-abroad.nl)

WoR: Kane is a new band to the UK market - for fans that may be reading about you for the first time, can you please introduce Kane and its music?

Dennis: Kane is a famous rock band in Holland just starting their international career in the UK and elsewhere. We have Dean (Dinand) on vocals and guitar, Dennis on guitar, Martijn on drums and Dion on bass. Our music can best be described as rock. We have had two albums out in Holland and our first international album “What If” has just been released in the UK. Check our website www.kane.nl if you wanna listen to it.

WoR: Does it feel strange to have to start building your fan base around the world when you've already had so much success in Holland?

Dennis: Not at all. You cannot expect success overnight. It takes a lot of hard work and we are willing to do just that. It's actually very nice to do our shows outside Holland, especially the UK, because it was the first time we could see if our songs would work in England, where everybody obviously speaks english very well if you know what I mean. We are used to singing in English in front of a Dutch crowd. There is a difference in what the effect of your music is gonna be like. We were very happy to feel that our songs were enjoyed by the audience when we played the Maroon 5 opening shows in London, Birmingham and Glasgow.

WoR: Have you been encouraged by the achievements of fellow European bands The Rasmus and HIM across Europe?

Dennis: I think Europe has far more to offer than what is offered on radio or TV these days. People tend to look at UK or US a lot but I think the European mainland has got some good bands as well. HIM and Rasmus are some of them. The fact that these bands can break a predominantly English and US market is encouraging for bands like Kane

WoR: Kane has been through a lot since forming in 1998, starting with breaking through the dance music dominance in Holland. What do you think makes Kane so resilient?

Dennis: We got signed to BMG 5 years ago when absolutely NO ROCK BAND would EVER get a record deal. We did anyway... Why? Maybe we were at the right time at the right place. That sounds corny but other than that, we believed in ourselves and still do, we liked to work hard and still do, we are known to be a very good live band (not at that time to be honest, but we're fast learners too haha), and we write good songs... at least that's what they think in Holland...so far...

WoR: You come across as a really approachable & grounded band and your Dutch fans are obviously very proud of you. Is this something that's particularly important to you?

Dennis: Most definitely. We try to be as close as possible. In the beginning that was very easy, it became a little more difficult later on when success came. But through means like the internet we are able to stay in contact on a very personal basis and we like that. There a so many fans communicating through the internet and meeting up before the gigs and have actually become friends in real life... That's great!

WoR: You've supported many of World of Rock's favourite bands including Bon Jovi, The Calling and Maroon 5 - who was your favourite to work with and have their performances influenced your own in any way?

Dennis: They were very different. We didn't get to see any of the Bon Jovi guys. They were in and out like a flash. Simple Minds (we opened up for them in Germany) were fantastic. We played with our old heroes and got to see the Champions League final with them in Hamburg, They were very nice and gave us a lot of room to do a good show. Maroon 5 were great! Nice guys and good musicians to. We played with The Calling in Germany and Sweden. They were nice although we didn't get to talk that much to them. Busy schedules and all that...

WoR: Although "What If" is your first UK album release, your discography in Holland is much wider. With regard to the DVD "With Or Without You", what made you choose U2 songs to cover?

Dennis: We had this thing in Holland called the Marlboro Flashbacks... a known band was asked to play 8 shows covering songs by a group that has influenced them a lot. We choose U2, did the gigs and had a great time doing it.

WoR: "Rain Down On Me" is going to be your first single release in the UK on 26th July, how did the Tiesto mix come about?

Dennis: Dean and Tiesto met and had a good vibe about working together once. Tiesto made a remix for us and Dean performed “Rain Down On Me” during Tiesto's sold out stadium gig in Holland. Tiesto played the aftershow when Kane played the Amsterdam Arena last year. The remix became a thing by itself and even reached the NO.1 spot in Belgium. It wasn't a planned thing it just came about...

WoR: Do you have a dream venue that you'd love to play?

Dennis: Madison Square Garden on New Years Eve or the Superbowl halftime show... would be nice wouldn't it? Seriously, every city has its own holy ground. In London it’s probably the Royal Albert Hall or The Astoria, In Paris it’s the Olympia, In Amsterdam it’s The Paradiso and so on. Those are my favourites cause everybody who means something in music has played there...

WoR: Are you excited to be playing your first UK headline gig on 7th July and are you looking forward to breaking the UK market?

Dennis: Very much. I think we have a good vibe with the UK in general. The Dutch and the British, I would say we get along... So it would be great to break your market. We have started already and the Mean Fiddler show is going to be another step for us...

WoR: What's next for Kane in the UK?

Dennis: After the Mean Fiddler show we are gonna do a lot of promo supporting the single and album release. Can't tell you anything specific yet, cause not all is confirmed yet, but i'll bet we will be back soon...

WoR: Finally, we have an 'Artist of the Month' feature on World of Rock (as you know!) - who would you choose as your 'Artist of a Lifetime'?

Dennis: For me that would be Jimi Hendrix, for Dean that would be Elvis, for Martijn that would be George Clinton and for Dion... i dunno... but I know he loves the LA Lakers... does that count??

World of Rock would like to extend its gratitude to Dennis for answering our questions and for making this whole Soundcheck possible.
